Movie Review : Get Hard

"Get Hard"  is a Warner Bros production. Released on March 27,2015.

Get Hard starts out looking like a romantic comedy about a man, his palatial house and his beautiful "materialistic" fiance, but quickly lets you know with Will Ferrell's naked posterior smashing up against a window where his gardener is working, it is definitely not.

James King (Ferrell) is a man who presumably has it all until he is arrested for embezzlement at his engagement party. Darnell Lewis (Hart) is the owner of a car wash service for luxury vehicles who is looking to afford a new home in a better neighborhood.

Ferrell and Hart's first on-screen meetup, shows off their ability to play off one another. Hart walks up to Ferrell with his hood up after cleaning his car, and tries to give Ferrell back his car keys. Ferrell freaks out, thinking Hart is a carjacker. Ferrell's reaction is hysterical.

When Ferrell finds he has 30 days until he is to be locked up for 10 years, he calls upon Darnell to help him "get hard."He assumed that Hart has been in prison because he is black. Ferrell offers to pay him,and Hart sees this as an opportunity to get the $30,000 he needs for his new home and gladly accepts.

Hart calls on his cousin Russell played by T.I. for help in preparing Ferrell to go to prison . His ex-con and gang leader status should be useful. Hart eventually takes Ferrell to the "hood" to give him some time with the type of people he will be going up against in prison.

A lot of the jokes and communication between the two characters are stereotypical, racial, and crude. However, in its lightheartedness this movie works well. In one scene, Hart simulates "the yard" in which Hart plays a Latin gang member, a bitch, and a member of a rival black gang. Hart runs circles around Ferrell, while Ferrell is dumbfounded at the act.

There are many amusing points and a few laugh-out-loud parts in this movie. The characters are somewhat stereotyped and contrived, but it all comes together to make a very good comedy. There is a lot of profanity and some full frontal male nudity; it is definitely not for a younger audience.
A.O. Scott of the New York Times defined this movie as, "One guy uses bad words wrong, the other guy uses them correctly."

That is true for parts of the movie, but it was much more than that. "Get Hard" was a lighthearted way of poking fun at racial and class relations. In my opinion, they did it very well with how crudely they worded most things.

I found this movie to be a delightful comedy, although crude and very adult oriented, I couldn't help but root for James to get absolved of his crime and Darnell to get his new home. If you like your comedies a little on the dark side then "Get Hard" might be for you.

A Community With Compassion.

Taken At 4:05a.m. April 1 of  SAHS fire.
On April Fools Day 2015, our city was rocked by a tragedy that was no laughing matter. At about 3 a.m. South Albany High School's cafeteria was set ablaze by an arsonist. The fire destroyed the cafeteria, band and choir rooms.

The majority of social media on April 1, were pictures of the blaze and words of hurt eventually turning to care and support.

The Facebook page South Albany Alumni and Community (Oregon) was buzzing with folks trying to find ways to help the school before the fire was even out.

In the hours after the fire, something amazing happened, an outpouring of support from not only the community of Albany, but, surrounding communities and even a celebrity with local roots.

The band Journey's drummer Deen Castronovo, who grew up in Keizer, Ore, donated $10,000  to help the music department replace some of the instruments lost in the fire.

Liby Pascua said, "When I first heard about the fire, it made me cry. After all I too attended SAHS and now one of my daughters do. I'm very happy to see all the community pulling together. I't just goes to show, you can't keep a REBEL down."

Linn-Benton Community College's own Dr. James M. Reddan, chair, faculty of music and the director of choral activities said,"My first thoughts when I found out about the fire and what had happened was sorrow."

"To see something like this happen to a school in our community is awful! Music is such an inspiring force that brings students, families, and communities together. It is such a huge loss, but the outpouring of support has been wonderful to see," said Reddan

"The first thing I could do was get in touch with the directors, find out what they need, and see what I, our students, and our program could do to help." said Reddan "

"I also was concerned for my current students who are alumni of SAHS music program and have been keeping them in my thoughts. As I know this is tragic for them, being that it was a place that helped to spark their continued musical growth and love for music prior to coming to LBCC," said Reddan.

Reddan  has put the choir director of SAHS in touch with the choral director at the Lutheran Church across the street from the school as she is an LBCC music alumni and they are working something out, especially for early morning classes.

"They did provide a meeting space for the students to attend the League Choral Festival on Thursday and have offered assistance as has the LBCC Choral Program," said Reddan

Band teacher Isaac Andrew said all of their instruments were lost to the fire.

Choir teacher Brett DeYoung reported the loss of the whole sheet music library, 80 brand-new choir robes, and all materials they would have sent on to state.

SAHS was the main kitchen for the district, they cooked breakfast and lunches for about seven other schools.

Twenty-eight-year old Zachary Burghart told the police he started the fire at SAHS by tossing a lit cigarette into a trash bin and crashed his vehicle into gates around the school.

Court documents filed in Linn County Circuit Court, said Burghart acknowledged starting a travel-trailer fire that resulted in a propane tank exploding at a nearby residence shortly after.

There are so many businesses and individuals making contributions and support to the rebuilding of SAHS.

The Greater Albany Public School (GAPS) District Assistant Superintendent, Tonya Everest, have stressed the importance of being transparent in everything being done for South Albany's Rebuild project.

Their insurance policy is anticipated to cover the reconstruction of the physical building as well as replace much of the contents within that building.

What is still unknown is how they will handle property that is personal or could be considered personal in nature.

Content of several school classrooms (Home Economics, Child Development, Band, and Choir) and several school programs (Cheer, Dance, And Leadership) were destroyed along with multi-school fundraiser materials.

Compiling the list of loss will be quite a task.

Week 1 Blog Post:

Topic 1:Story #1

  • Describe your story idea.
  • List 3 LIVE sources (names, titles, why they matter)
  • write 5 questions you want to answer in this story.
  • Your NUT GRAF (What the story is all about, and why it matters!)
My story is going to be on the the fire at South Albany High School and what we as a community can do to help out the children.

The live sources I am using are going to be,

  1. Dr. James Reddan, he is the Chair, Faculty of Music and the director of Choral Activities at Linn-Benton community College.
  2. Wells Fargo Bank, in Albany, Or.
  3. Panda Express and Taco Bell, Managers at both places, in Albany,Or.
The people I will be talking to matter because they are all helping out the students of SAHS in big ways.

The five questions I will be asking are,
  • Why are you compelled to help the students out?
  • Where can you be reached?
  • What is your plan of action?
  • Who made the decision to help out the students?
  • When will the help begin?
I want to write this story because this is such a horrible event that took place in our community. The students that have been affected by this act need to know their community is here for all of them. Help is on the way, they are not alone.

Topic 2: Goals-- What 3 goals do I have for improving my writing, editing, research or journalism skills this term in JN217- Feature Writing?

  1. One goal I have is to improve my Leads. I will be working on this, along with my Nut Graf. I have improved though the last term, so I'm sure I will have it by the end of this term.
  2. The second thing I will be improving on is my interviewing skills, this is a hard one for me. Talking with people isn't easy when you have high anxiety like I do, but this is a skill I will work hard on to be the best I can be.
  3. The third goal I have is to improve on my research skills. This is time consuming and I just need to set aside the proper amount of time needed to do the job well. I will be working on this one too.
